On a Train
I stepped on a train to
Midtown Manhattan at 7 in the morning
And I slowly analyzed the
Various Mixtures of Faces

And the air felt heavy
And I was saddened

I was surrounded by heartless people with their own personal soap operas
that were filled with different problems
Each one with tired minds, hearts, and bodies
Each exhausted
And sleeping while standing

And the air felt heavy
And I was saddened.
The woman
Sitting directly in my front view
Slept and did not feel the sudden

stops and jerks of the subway

And I wondered… What has this woman gone through
that her wrinkles were so thoroughly covered on the outer cringes of her
eyes?

And the air felt heavy
And I was saddened

And the woman next to her
Did not even notice the homeless man next to her, as she stared into space,
heavy hearted, and eyes, half-closed

And the air was heavy
And I was saddened
