could have been
I could’ve been your wife. Me and you and a pack of Camel’s And a couple bottles of your favorite brew We could’ve been poor and dependant On everybody that we knew You could’ve been stuck working as a waiter And me just another cashier. We might’ve never gone to college Continued the cycle of poverty But we’d be “happy” like you said we’d be Just because I gave you all of me And maybe I’d end up with a couple of kids God knows we couldn’t afford But my family won’t help us now And we have to pay our bills somehow So you like you always do Run out to the bar to have a brew You’d run from all your problems While I’d be home trying to solve them And then you’d figure out I’ve ruined your life And you don’t want me, as your wife Blame me for your failing musical career Though I’d stood by you every single year Some how you’d just keep tearing me apart It’s hard to remember just how did this start Next you’d be taking the prescription pills Living drugged against your will You could’ve ended up just like your father But I am not your wife And that is not my life Since you left I’ve been thinking an awful lot About all things I’m missing out And all the things I thank god- I’m not.
